Cairo and Cornbread – Wednesday, Oct 6th

No, its not a mirage – this Southern couple has found the Holy Land – or Holy Bread that is right here in the heart of Cairo. NO, we didn't fly home early, this was at a fabulous little restaurant called Roy's country cooking serving only the best fried chicken, chicken and biscuits, and lamb. Not quite certain where the latter fits in, but it seems that when the Egyptians think Southern soul they've got their own interpretation. After being skeptical at first, asking John no less than three times if he was sure it was the "real deal" I can say the corn bread at this place is absolutely heavenly. To boot, they even serve it with a genuine, yet unique Apple Butter – not Cracker Barrel style, this was, as it says, butter and apples. Not sure where this Southern delicacy was lost in translation, but I have to say this new version wasn't so bad. With the Egyptian waiters sporting overalls, to Kenny Chesney on the jukebox, to clothes pins from the line on the napkins, this Southern couple was right at home. Just when we though it couldn't get any better we read the following sign on the wall – "If it ain't good, send it back." Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this southernism has officially made its way across the waters and continents and found its way here to Cairo Egypt. I thought it would be selfish not to share the good news. Lesson we learned today, Cairo cornbread really ain't that bad….
